The best hair clippers

We asked the experts to reveal their favourite hair clippers for home use

best hair clippers
The Wahl Super Taper was our favourite hair clipper, after speaking with industry experts

Hair clippers are flying off the shelves during the coronavirus lockdown. With worried hair-owners wondering when they’ll next be able to visit a barber or hairdresser, clippers are becoming an essential item. At John Lewis, sales have spiked by 200 per cent, with a company representative describing “unprecedented demand”.

Hair clippers, as opposed to beard trimmers, are designed for your head hair. The main difference, says Marcus Gaye, also known as and author of, “is that beard trimmers have a thinner blade, and therefore can cut closer to the skin. The clipper is designed to cut more hair over larger areas. A trimmer is better at edges, outlining hair and adding more detail.”

Benjamin May, founder ofin London, adds that hair clippers are also bigger and more powerful, affording them the capability to remove more hair over a larger area.

大发体育网站How easy are hair clippers to use? Whether you’ve been charged with cutting the hair of a partner or family member, or are attempting on yourself as many have in lockdown, May warns that it’s not as simple as it looks. He suggests watching a few YouTube tutorials to develop your technique. “It can be quite a cack-handed feeling at first, it can definitely feel awkward, like holding a Nokia 5210, which was never comfortable to hold.”

大发体育网站In terms of the shaving itself, most clippers range from a one setting to an eight – though if you remove the length attachment, it’ll be around a zero or 0.5. While a fade might be too complicated for the first-timer, says even a grade two all over isn’t necessarily plain sailing. “I always think back to when my step-mum shaved my dad’s hair. There were always long hairs left,” May reminisces. It is often necessary to go over the whole scalp a few times to shave it all off.

大发体育网站Both Jaye and make the salient point that, if you’re experimenting, it’s worth starting with a longer setting – after all, you can always remove more hair, but you can’t quickly grow it back. “It is best to use clippers on dry, product-free hair,” adds Jaye.

Price and quality ranges, but you don’t need to break the bank for a home cut. “A bad workman always blames his tools, but if your tools are bad, then it is highly likely to give you a less-than-perfect finish,” Jaye explains. The most important factors determining quality are blade power and the ability of your blade to cut your hair smoothly and accurately.

Price-wise, you don’t necessarily need to be spending more than £50 for something that’ll do a good job. It’ll probably be corded, with uncorded options a bit more expensive. May says there isn’t much difference between the two styles in terms of performance: “If anything, corded clippers prevent those panic moments, when you might run out of battery.”

Professional clippers are usually more powerful, but tend to be far more expensive. For Jaye, there is little point getting one for domestic use, as you won’t be cutting hundreds of heads’ worth of hair.

May stresses the importance of maintaining a clean clipper. This is because as you shave, hair gets caught between the blades and can build up underneath, filtering into the machine itself. Mostly, clippers are easy to take apart, so you can give a good clean with a brush and some oil – usually included. You can do this every time you shave for optimal hygiene.

So which hair clippers should you buy? Here are the best options available, starting with our favourite.

1. Wahl super taper

Why we like it: 大发体育网站Unrivalled performance

“I don’t know anyone who doesn’t use Wahl,” says May of his barber mates. “They are just well made, well built, have longevity – they’re reliable machines. I wouldn’t go so far as saying they’re the Apple of hair clippers, but for quality, longevity and pricing, they’re the best out there.”

American brand Wahl have been producing hair clippers since the 1910s, and their reputation as the best in the business is widely accepted. If you’ve had your hair shaved at a barbershop, chances are it was a Wahl.

May says this model is incredibly reliable – more so than cheaper ones – meaning it’ll last a long time. It’s ergonomic and comfortable to hold, works on all hair types and is the best in the business – though you’ll have to pay a little more to get hold of it.

2. Wahl colour pro styler hair clipper

Why we like it: Very affordable, and the colourful guide combs are a nice touch.

Jaye agrees with May that when it comes to hair clippers, it has to be Wahl. “This family owned American firms makes the best clippers at all price levels, and this is a great price for something guaranteed to make the grade – literally.”

Indeed, this corded clipper comes in at just £12.99 and, and while understandably not as powerful as the clipper above, it is still remarkably efficient. We particularly like the colour-coded combs, which help you quickly identify the correct length setting, to prevent any cock-ups.

It also comes with a neck brush, a cleaning brush, scissors, cleaning oil, and more. You can’t get better value than this Wahl clipper.

3. Remington Quick Cut hair clipper

Why we like it: Built for speed

“This clipper is less orthodox in design and built for speed,” says Jaye. “It is designed to be the fastest clipper and is ideal for cutting your own hair. I wouldn’t advocate rushing anything, but the clever ‘Curvecut’ blade technology is said to be more efficient when moving around the contours of your head and when you’re feeling more confident you can definitely start to speed up.”

According to Remington, the technology allows for 57 per cent more blade coverage than one of its standard clippers, explaining the increased efficiency of a trim. It is also designed to be as comfortable as possible in the hand, comes with nine lengths, and is said to be ideal for those wanting to maintain sideburns.

4. Oster Fast Feed

大发体育网站A bit more advanced – reflected in its price – this Oster model is favoured by stylists, so is perhaps one for the expert looking for a bit more than a grade two all over.

大发体育网站“The Fast Feed is for someone looking to create more style,” says May. “This machine will allow you to fade more easily and closely. A clipper for those with the confidence to do a little more.”

The corded clipper is designed for quick and convenient adjustability. It is sturdy and durable and aimed at performance. It comes with three guide combs and all the cleaning accessories.

5. Philips Series 3000 hair clipper

Another affordable option is this corded clipper from electronics stalwarts Philips. “It features strong steel blades and an adjustable taper lever for multiple cutting lengths without changing attachment combs,” says Jaye. This is handy, as with many clippers you need to manually remove the comb guide before attaching a different length. It helps provide “that professional fade effect,” says Jaye.

大发体育网站The adjustable blades range from .5mm to 3mm, but there are attachment combs for length of up to 12mm (grade four). As it only goes to grade four, it perhaps isn’t ideal for those looking to maintain a lengthier hair cut.

6. Remington HC340 hair clippers

大发体育网站Cordless clippers tend to be a little pricier than their corded counterparts. This Remington number is on the affordable side of things. Remington make some fantastic no-nonsense, durable options, and this fits right in.

It comes with an adjustable comb, meaning you can switch between a variety of lengths, to better aid fading or just provide more versatility to your cut. There's a handy comb lock, so you won't accidentally switch between lengths during your shave. The batter lasts 40 minutes on a full charge (16 hours), which is less than some more expensive models, but more than enough for a cut. The pack comes with a comb, scissors, a storage case, oil and a cleaning brush.
